Abstract

The article analyzes the fertilization biology of the mangold (Beta vulgaris L. var. vulgaris), the origin, morphological and genetic characteristics of poly- and monocotyledonous (monogermic and multigermic) forms, as well as modern approaches in breeding and seed production. Based on the analysis of the literature, the development cycle of mangold as a cross-pollinating, biennial crop, and the factors influencing flowering and seed formation were highlighted. The importance of hybridization, backcrossing, and selection methods in the formation of monothermy was shown. The results of molecular-genetic and agronomic studies conducted in recent years have been summarized, and the need to take into account fertilization characteristics in breeding has been substantiated.
